The Affordable Care Act (ACA) guarantees more than 150 million privately insured Americans coverage for a comprehensive range of preventive services without patient cost-sharing. This guarantee has allowed families to realize enormously important health and financial benefits.
Many of the most important preventive services guaranteed under the ACA are the result of carefully developed evidence-based recommendations of the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). Data from FAIR Health—an independent nonprofit that holds the nation’s largest collection of commercial healthcare claims data—show that in 2024, an estimated 100 million patients used ACA preventive care. While rates vary by state, even in states with the lowest overall use of preventive health care, four out of ten patients used at least one preventive service in 2024.
Highly effective preventive care can be costly, of course. FAIR Health cost data further show that a typical family using recommended preventive services can realize over $4,000 in out-of-pocket cost savings.
