In a new blog on the Commonwealth Fund’s To the Point, the Geiger Gibson Program in Community Health examines the challenges experienced by community health centers following the Supreme Court’s 2023 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

With support of the Commonwealth Fund, our team conducted focus groups with staff from CHCs and state primary care associations in 15 states - including 11 that have restricted abortion access and four adjacent states. We found a system under duress, with many providers reeling from the compounding effects of Dobbs, Medicaid unwinding, and resource, capacity, and workforce constraints driven by local and national changes in the delivery of health care services.

Our blog underscores the importance of community health centers in providing essential maternal and reproductive health care services,  and the need for predictable funding and enhanced federal support to meet the increasing demand for a wider scope of high-quality maternal and reproductive health services in medically underserved areas.
