The American Public Health Association and George Washington University public health scholars have sounded the alarm over newly proposed regulations from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) that could lead to the loss of health insurance for up to two million Americans.
Public comments jointly filed with CMS highlight the significant public health implications of these proposed regulations. If finalized, these regulations would:
- Eliminate the streamlined renewal process for the lowest-income policyholders while making it harder to apply for initial coverage.
- End the special enrollment period that eases access to affordable marketplace coverage for individuals and families who lose Medicaid.
- End coverage eligibility for DACA recipients.
- Impose a nationwide exclusion on medically necessary care essential for the treatment of people with gender dysphoria.
Public comments on the proposed regulation, CMS-9884-P titled, "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act: Marketplace Integrity and Affordability," were filed April 7, 2025. You can read the public comment and the full scholars list on the Geiger Gibson Program website.
